No Brainer: Top Things To Do in Peru

Peru is a large and diverse country that caters to all types of adventurers. A journey through Lima, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley offers a country rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a dream destination for travelers seeking a blend of ancient civilizations and vibrant modern life. From the bustling streets of Lima to the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu and the serene landscapes of the Sacred Valley, Peru offers an unforgettable experience for every type of traveler.

Lima: The Vibrant Capital

Lima: The Vibrant CapitalLima, the capital city of Peru, is a huge city with over 11 million residents and is often the first stop for international visitors. Located on the Pacific coast, this bustling metropolis is known for its historical significance, culinary delights, and vibrant nightlife.

Lima’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing stunning colonial architecture. The Plaza Mayor (Main Square) is the heart of the city, surrounded by significant landmarks such as the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Cathedral of Lima. The Cathedral of Lima is also the burial site of the renowned conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who is known for invading Peru and destroying the Incan Empire during the 16th century.

Gastronomy

Lima is renowned as the gastronomic capital of South America. The city’s culinary scene is diverse and innovative, blending traditional Peruvian ingredients with contemporary techniques. Don’t miss trying ceviche, a traditional dish made from fresh raw fish cured in leche de tigre or citrus juices, typically served with onions, chili peppers, and cilantro. Popular restaurants such as Central, Maido, and Astrid y Gastón have put Lima on the global culinary map as some of the top restaurants in the world. I believe the best ceviche can be found at Punto Azul and the Ceviche House, located in Lima.

From an American perspective, the overall prices for dining and nightlife are not as cheap as one would expect but think similar to moderate pricing at chain restaurants like Applebee’s or TGI Friday’s. Fine dining can be costly, with prices going over $100 per person, and at Central, the tasting menus start at around $200 per person. You will be mistaken if you visit Lima specifically expecting cheap dining or entertainment. Cusco is slightly less expensive than Lima. Travelers should also be cautious about food safety, as the local water is unsafe to consume.

Machu Picchu: The Lost City of the Incas

Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a testament to the ingenuity and architectural prowess of the Inca civilization. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains, this ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an iconic symbol of Peru.

The journey to Machu Picchu often begins in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. From Cusco, travelers can take a train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. The train ride is easy and offers amazing views of the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River.

Machu Picchu itself is a marvel of engineering, with its well-preserved ruins showcasing terraced fields, temples, and residential areas. It’s the most popular destination in Peru and a must-see landmark in the country.

A trip to Peru offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from the urban sophistication of Lima to the ancient mysteries of Machu Picchu and the serene beauty of the Sacred Valley. Whether you’re a history buff, a culinary enthusiast, or an adventurer, Peru has something to captivate your senses and leave you with lasting memories.
